Meet the Team: Harry Summers, 2nd Line Engineer

Last month, we added another great engineer to our Stripe team… Queue our latest 2nd Line Engineer, Harry. Want to know who our new resident foodie, dog lover and ISO expert is? Keep on reading…

Harry, tell us a little about your background and how you’ve come to find yourself at Stripe.

Well my professional journey started at Bournemouth University, where I started a Business IT course. However I knew this wasn’t the direction I wanted to take, so in 2008 I decided to join a managed service provider based in Bath. For 11 years I worked here, initially starting off as a first line engineer, and ultimately working my way up to the offer of a Directorship. However, after deciding this wasn’t for me, I began my search for a new role and I’ve found my way to Stripe!

Sounds like a big change! You must have quite a lot of experience if you’ve been in the industry for over 10 years?

So, I have A-Levels in IT and History, and then industry accreditation’s like Cisco CCNA, Ruckus WISE, Microsoft MCP and Fortinet NSE (Basically everything I need to do my job!). When I left my last role, I also had experience as an ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, which essentially means I know about how to implement the necessary legal and technical frameworks involved in an organisation’s risk management processes (sounds complicated we know). I’m looking forward to getting the ISO project started at Stripe too, I know this is something the team are keen to get under their belts and it will be a great challenge to kick off with.

Definitely – We’re looking forward to it too! So why did you end up choosing Stripe?

The opportunity to implement the ISO 27001 certification was particularly appealing to me, and to be a key member in the SOC team was especially exciting! I’m also really looking forward to getting some hands-on experience with the Microsoft Azure platform, it’s constantly evolving so it’s something I definitely want to know more about!

It is always changing… And I can imagine no day is the same for an engineer either?

No, the possibilities are endless but priority one is always to ensure client systems are operational and proactively fix issues. As I’m still new to the business I haven’t been let loose on projects, so for now my other job is to answer the phone and provide expert technical support. Honestly I’m looking forward to getting stuck in wherever the business needs me, and the ISO 27001 project should be starting shortly so that’s going to take up a fair chunk of my time!

Ok, so now we know a little about your professional life, we’ll move onto the interesting stuff. Let’s start with achievements… Climbed any mountains? Metaphorical or physical.

Well when I was younger I represented Bath and North East Somerset as a county swimmer (I still like to swim, but just not competitively anymore). I also bought my first house at 24, which in this day and age isn’t the easiest thing to do, so I’m particularly proud of that!

Certainly a great achievement! And what about your interests, what do you like/dislike?

I love nothing more than food, movies, time with my fiancée and our French Bull Dog Luna (maybe not specifically in that order). On the weekends we are usually out in the local countryside letting Luna loose and enjoying a pub lunch or a day out at the Cotswold Wildlife Park. When we can, we enjoy city breaks in Europe and holidays to the US, and we can’t get enough of Italy! If I do get any time to myself I enjoy reading, fiction or non-fiction will keep me happy, but mostly historic and related to the military. I’ve also trained in power-lifting, but recently haven’t found the time to actively enjoy this passion. As for dislikes, I’m not a fan of social media, so you won’t find me on any platforms, except maybe Pinterest (he says talking to a Marketing Exec).

Power-lifting? So on a Friday night we might find you at the gym?

Definitely not, face down in a take-away pizza with a beer, with Annys and Luna watching a movie.

Sounds ideal – Who doesn’t love a good Take-Away! Okay so, final question… If you could meet one person, dead or alive who would it be?

There are quite a few, but number one is probably Paul Walker, from my teenage years he was my idol and symbolised everything I thought (and still think) is cool. He started my obsession with California, the surf lifestyle, cars, marine wildlife. I could go on…

Power-lifting, Fast and Furious enthusiast or techy, ISO implementation expert – there are two sides to every coin, and this is certainly true for our new team member! We’re looking forward to working with you Harry!
